Jul 6 Grant Village Lodge - West YellowstoneAfter traveling through the Teton Park we sent last night in a hotel inside Yellowstone Park. That gave us an early start to look around the thermal areas of the Park. The Old Faithful guesser didn't disappoint us. We waited with about three hundred other tourists to watch the Steam/Water spout that got to about 50 feet high. It lasted a couple of minutes, but I noticed a lot of people were moving of before it had settle down again having taken there pictures to show the folks back home !
There are a lot of dead trees in the Park as well as many showing the signs of recent fires. This was actually a bonus for us because we could see into the vast wilderness. Typically the trees would be down to the roadway and that's as far as people would be able to see - not far at all. The drive through the park had waterfalls and rivers which were really spectacular. We left the Park and entered the town of West Yellowstone which was in the state of Montana. We had lunch and then it was time to unload the trailer and say good-bye to Craig. In only a few days we have really enjoyed his company and of course wit. He's a typical say it as you see it Aussie so it will be quiet now, we will certainly miss him. He has a 5 hour drive to get back to Gillette. The town of West Yellowstone is old. It was established soon after the Park was declared such by the Government in the early 1800's - the oldest Nation Park in the world we are told. As we explore the town we can see a large plume of smoke from the North East. That is the general direction for us out of town tomorrow. A bush fire is burning and there are teams of fire fighters in attendance. In the evening we paid a visit to the Towns OmniMax theater and watched Shacklton's epic story of survival in his attempt to travel across the Antarctic. It makes our journey seem child's play in proportion. |
